Lake Wilderness Elementary School Principal Audrey Meyers, Ph. D., announced today that she will move to a district-level position next year, working as part of the Special Services and Teaching and Learning departments.

In a letter to her staff, Meyers explained that the decision to leave Lake Wilderness Elementary will allow her to focus on providing support for students and staff in social and emotional health, which is an area of special interest to her. It will also meet a need to bring more focus to her own family.

“I want to be the best mom that I can be,” she said, referring to her two young children. “This new position will give me the balance that I’ve been looking for.”

Meyers said the decision was not easy and that she will miss working with the students, staff and families at Lake Wilderness. In a message to parents, Meyers said:

“It has been an honor to serve you and our community for the past six years. I have been blessed with the opportunity to lead during great moments in Tahoma, including the launch of Future Ready Skills, the transition from four to six elementary schools, and the building of a new Lake Wilderness Elementary School, among many others. I have very much enjoyed being a part of your children’s lives through it all, and will miss so many of you and your partnerships that have developed over that time as well. And even more I will miss your sweet children who have become like my own. It will be difficult to not see their smiling faces each morning – they truly make my days brighter. I wish for you all the best and will think of you often,” she said.

In her new role, Meyers will serve as a staff instructional coach. She will also support students by coordinating 504 plans, which ensure that students with an identified disability receive accommodations to ensure they have access to learning that ensures their academic success. Meyers also will help guide the district as it implements new state requirements to assist students with dyslexia and will supervise a new community counseling position that is shared between the school district and City of Maple Valley.

“I’m thrilled to have her support,” Special Services Director Annette Whittlesey said. “Her background, with all the work she has done to help us with student interventions, is great.”

Meyers has served as Lake Wilderness principal since 2014, after moving from a principal position in the Bellevue School District.

The district will post the principal position to the Human Resources website and begin the hiring process next week. We will keep the community updated on the process.
